UCR 2023

Lead instructor: Chris Kempes & Melanie Mitchell

This course is no longer in session.

9.1 Preparation » Melanie Mitchell's Introduction to Complexity (required)

It is required that you complete Melanie Mitchell's online course, Introduction to Complexity, prior to the start of the UCR program.

It is free to enroll, which will allow you to submit assignments. The assignments tend to be computation-based. Alternatively, you may chose to watch the lectures on YouTube without enrolling.

The course will introduce you to many of the topics covered in the UCR program, in addition to many of the faculty. This will allow you to ask more informed questions to the faculty this summer, and enrich your overall experience.

We hope that by the start of the UCR program, you will be familiar with all of these topics:

  • properties of complex sytems
  • agent-based models
  • nonlinear dynamics & chaos
  • information theory
  • evolution & genetic algorithms
  • networks
  • power laws & scaling

We also encourage you to explore the other online courses and tutorials on SFI’s ComplexityExplorer.org. They’re a great way to brush up on complex systems math and concepts.
