Is there a histogram of student marks or some way to get a feel of how well we did?
Hi Pierre, we don't publish the students' results.
I would love to know this too. Some statistics of the peer assessment.
Hello Kasia, I wouldn't expect CE to publish the student's results. What I was suggesting is a simple histogram - even if it is with 2% or 5% percentiles. The idea is so students can understand how well they did relative to the class. If that is not possible, perhaps each student can receive a percentile rank.
This is my third course with CE over 11 years and I'm curious if I'm still keeping up with the younger generations.
Sure, I get it, I'll see what I can do.
Thank you Kasia
I've put together some basic histograms with a) model design assignment scores, b) final model assignments scores, c) exam scores, d) total scores to give you an overview of how well you did in comparison to others. For each chart I deleted data from people who didn't submit anything. You can download the charts from here: https://we.tl/t-pzYxD4F4Y0
Thank you Kasia,
Can you confirm if the ranges are inclusive of the min OR the max value? For example, does 80% belong in the range [0,75 0,80] or [0,80, 0,85]?80% is in [0.75, 0.80]
Thank you for the clarification Kasia

Hi everyone! I'm Elmo Feiten, I just completed an MS in Business Analytics and I'm about to defend my dissertation for a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati. One of my research projects asks how we know what exactly highly abstract simulation models tell us about the real world. This is especially interesting to me because philosophers of science themselves have started using ABM to study how scientists interact with each other, but I think there are general problems with this methodology. You can read about it in my paper here, if you're interested: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/philosophy-of-science/article/mapterritory-relationship-in-gametheoretic-modeling-of-cultural-evolution/4B96728A77C69E15DDC69A5959D5475F
Hello Elmo, thanks for sharing
wow. this is cool
My name is Jorge Eduardo Miceli. I have a PhD and am a professor and researcher in social anthropology at the University of Buenos Aires. I am also a programmer and hold a master's degree in discourse analysis and statistics, although I still need to defend my thesis in the latter field. I hope that this course will provide me with insights, analytical resources, and tools for my work in the field of complex models at both the academic and professional levels.
I have had unexpected travels overlap with taking this wonderful course. As a result I have missed a lot. Hoping to catch up on this soon.
Nice to be here.
Hello everyone, I am David from Academia Sinica in Taiwan, currently working as a research assistant. My areas of interest include the impact and distinction of life systems on traditional physical systems. I hope to gain more inspiration and learn more about complex systems research through this course.
Hi all, My name is Fernando, i´m a computer science teacher in Medellin, Colombia. I research in areas relater to public policies and geographical systems. I hope this course help me in different topics related to my research interest.
Best regards!Hi Fernando, GIS systems and agents, sounds a lot of hard and important work ahead!
Hello Fernando, I'm also in Medellín and working with GIS and simulation.
I work as a research Scientist and a lecturer
I am a PhD biomedical engineer with a keen interest in computational systems biology. My doctoral work was largely empirical, but I did what I could to incorporate machine learning and computational methods to disentangle some drug interaction problems. My research involved the discovery and development of combination nanomedicines for the treatment of childhood blood cancers. I hope to learn more about agent-based modeling in this course to add to my computational toolset, for I somehow slipped through engineering without learning how to code! I would love to learn the theory and applications behind ABM in the hopes that I can apply it to sociological, economic, and ecological phenomena.
I'm a little late to the party, but my name is Ben and I'm a physics and music performance double major at Illinois Wesleyan University in Central Illinois. I'm excited to gain more experience with modeling, as I know it will be a useful skill to have in my career.
Hi All, this Nathan from Uganda, currently a postdoc at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. My interests and research is in Theoretical Ecology, Coexistence theory, competition networks, evolutionary theory and mathematical modeling. Its a pleasure to finally learn ABM. I have been using mainly deterministic ODEs and using MATLAB for model simulations. ABM will provide me more options and expand the scope of my research tools.
Hi everyone, I'm Héctor from Mexico.

Hello all. Myself Rajib from India. I am currently a final year student pursuing Bachelors degree with Major in engineering Physics and Minors in Economics. I am gradually getting more interested in modelling complex systems like economic or financial networks and would love to dive into some real world problems. Would definitely love to connect with anyone interested in this topic and discuss various possibilities. thank You.
Hi. My name is Garvit. I am entering my 3rd year in economics. I have always been reading more on the philosophy and humanities side of things, and I came across complexity theory a few years ago. I am interested in it as it differs considerably from the philosophical considerations of economics (which I am not a big fan of). I am hoping to shift disciplines to sociology/anthropology or somewhere in the intersection of complexity/systems sciences or computational social sciences, or something of that sort. So, I decided to take as many as Santa Fe's courses as I can to figure out if this is my thing. Looking forward to this amazing course!!
I am a PhD student and I am going to use agent-based modelling in my dissertation
Hello all, I am Edward from Mombasa, Kenya.
Hello everyone.

cheers
My name is Norberto Jorge Gonçalves.
At moment, I'm teaching Physics courses to several undergraduate courses.
My interest in this kind of subject came from biology and ecologycal systems studied by collegues in other departments, and I myself do research in Computational Physics and the dynamics of ABM is similar to what I do in the past.
Hello my name is Daniel and I am a sociologist from Germany. My dissertation is focussing on segregation. I want to use ABMs to trace segregation processes and how they change when agents are given real-world attributes.
Hi Daniel, welcome! Do you already have NetLogo experience? I played around with the Schelling model a bit, and find it very intriguing that social transformation patterns seem to follow similar thermodynamic rules as material transformations.

Or. https://www.pnas.org/doi/epdf/10.1073/pnas.0609371103Maybe you are interested in a Zoom meeting discussing the topic? Feel free to contact me, if so: https://www2.wiwi.rub.de/personen/david-piorunek/
those are quite interesting papers, thank you for sharing! Over my studies in materials science, I found it very intriguing of how "organized" social behaviour can appear. Sometimes, I also use analogies from physics or chemistry (it is funny how you can describe your mood with a semiconductor band structure). But I guess this will now become much more refined. I just happened to stumble upon complexity studies very recently, but it is a quite refreshing perspective. I am also from Germany and if you like to discuss some topics, I would be quite happy to join!

Hi people, I am form Colombia, I have been working with Netlogo and creating agent-based models. Glad to be here. Regards to the world!
I'm Michael DeBellis. I'm retired now but I work as much as I ever did, now I work mostly on research that I find interesting but I also do paid consulting once in a while. I live in San Francisco. In the past I was a partner at Deloitte Consulting and a research scientist at the Information Sciences Institute and a lab that Accenture sponsored which no longer exists called the Center for Strategic Technology Research (CSTaR) in Chicago. I've mostly been working with the Semantic Web but in the last year I've also started working with LLMs and how to integrate them with knowledge graphs. I'm taking this class because I have some ideas on the evolution of human altruism that I think can best be modeled using ABM. Here's my blog if you are interested in learning more about knowledge graphs, ontologies, etc. you might find it interesting: https://www.michaeldebellis.com/blog
Nice to get to know your background Michael! I too I’m based in the Bay Area in San Ramon, California.
Hi everyone, this is Drew. I am excited to join this class and learn with everyone here even though I have more than 25 years of experience in information technology I still am a lifelong learner. Excited to partner with our professor as well as with one another!
Hi All!
I am a consultant on civil engineering, based in Spain, with some amateur experience in NetLogo: did some course on it 4 years ago, perhaps in Coursera, and found it an eyes-opener.
Traffic Safety Engineer in the State of Nevada. I have dabbled in ABM with my master's and PhD studies in collaborative governance. Always insightful. Now I am wanting to probe the Gordian's Knot, Wicked Problem of traffic safety in the United States. Social, cultural, physical, and other potential theoretical domains. Time to find the simple rules...
Hi folks,
I live in Albuqerque, NM (just a short drive to the Santa Fe Institute). I have been a fan of complexity science for over 10 years now. I'm a therapist by profession and use complexity ideas in my work and teaching regularly. I'm also a doctoral student currently in clinical psychology and am interested in the application of complexity research methods into the field of psychology. This course on ABM and any future coursework on network analysis methods would be extremely fun and fascinating for me.

I am currently based in Oxford and have not done any modeling before. I am hoping to model the flow of misinformation among youth, although I currently don't have a clear idea how to do this. Hopefully, this will become clearer during the course.
I'm excited to learn about everyone else's projects!
Saludos
Hey there, I'm just about to finish my Bachelors in Cognitive Science. However lately I've become much more interested in (political) ecology and economics, and systems thinking generally. So I hope to learn some valuable tools to understand societies here.
Looking forward to learning alongside everyone in this course. I'm interested in applying agent-based modeling to social systems in cities to address challenges. Also curious to see in what other contexts ABM is useful.
Hi, my name is Edgar and I'm from Mexico City.
I'm currently enrolled in a PhD program in Engineering Sciences and this course will help me to develop a lot of nice experiments that I'm intending to do.
Greatings
Hi Edgar, I hope you could talk about those projects in the future
Hi Alfredo, sure! I'm trying to modeling human biased decision-making when playing a game. How about you?
I'm doing my PhD on National Security and I'm trying to understand how cognitive biases influence the process behind decision-making in geopolitical situations. I believe that ABM could be an interisting approach to asses this phenomenon. I'd be happy to participate and learn the most possible. Pleased to meet you all!!
Hello everyone, I'm Saru from China. I have a bachelor's degree in Applied Physics and a master's degree in Computer Information Science. Currently, I am pursuing a data science course at MIT. I am very interested in topics such as emergence, self-organization, and cellular automata. I have been following Santa Fe and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in this course. I look forward to learning and progressing together with all of you.
I am interested to see how the tools can be used to solve real life problems
I'm a Doctor of Computer Science who's research centers around social insect behavior. I retired from the IT Security rat race and became a beekeeper. I'd like to use ABM to model what I see and understand of the honey bee superorganism, to hopefully contribute to the field of entomology. Wish I'd been introduced to this tool back in the mid-2000s to help my work. Here's to making up for it up 20 years later!
I work at the University of Mississippi and I'm just interested in the topic. Looking forward to the course!
I am a doctoral candidate at the National University of Colombia, I will use agent-based modeling as a tool to better understand organizational resilience as an emerging response in the beekeeping sector of Colombia.
Howdy. I'm a safety analyst hoping to learn novel approaches for understanding patterns in accident data. By academic background, I have a Ph.D. in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience. During graduate school, I played around with chaos and complexity on my own (and not just the state of my workspace, though that could justifiably be described in those terms). However, that wasn't on the direct path to graduation and in any case grad school was a while ago for me. So, I'm looking forward to more formally learning how to do agent based modeling.
Hi guys! Hope you enjoy the course - Thanks to SFI!
Michael ~
Hello everybody,
my name is Anke Schwind and I live in Spain. Hello, I am currently at the University of Nevada Las Vegas creating what I hope will be a good base for working with complexity science to tackle economic problems. To do this I am double majoring in Math and Econ and supporting this with minors including; Physics, Psych, Business Analytics and Finance. I think ABM is a very important tool for improving the way the field of economics is practiced and I am excited to be here developing the skills to put it to use!
Hi Nate, forecasting using and ABM approach can provide a practical way to generate effective budgets for governments
hi, thanks - I find that sort of thing so interesting!
Good afternoon. My name is Josh Behl and I am an associate professor of Project Management and Operations Management at Minnesota State University Moorhead. My interest in Complexity studies goes back to my dissertation and its focus on modeling attractor and repellors in complex classroom ecosystems.
As far as programming goes, I used to program a lot about 10 years ago when I was a consultant. However, my days are largely academics now with a little bit of project management on the side for a major US based manufacturing company. So, I would likely consider myself a non-practicing programmer at the moment. However, I love doing it.
Other than that, I do all my work remotely from Southern California in my home office!
