There are some months when it feels like nothing much is happening on Complexity Explorer, as we churn away creating new content and initiatives.  Then, there are months when there is so much to tell our enthusiastic complexity learners we just don't know where to start! This month, we are bursting at the seams with news.  Read on and get inspired!

Nonlinear Dynamics and Intro to Chaos are Live

Liz Bradley's Nonlinear Dynamics: Mathematical and Computational Approaches and Dave Feldman's Introduction to Dynamical Systems and Chaos both opened September 4th.   Were you planning on enrolling but hadn't gotten around to it yet? Jump in now! Were you thinking of getting your friendly complexity enthusiast acquaintance to take one of (or both!) of the courses? Go hassle them into enrolling now!

Get ready to throw down your Complexity learning with the Challenges

You asked, we answered.  You want to flex your complexity knowledge muscles and try out your skills on real world problems? No problem.  Or rather, yes problems! We are bringing complexity problems to you and setting you free to approach and solve them any way you see fit.  The Complexity Challenges will feature new problems developed in collaboration between Santa Fe Institute faculty and an organizational partner, often a member of SFI's Applied Complexity Network.  This new online project learning experience is meant to serve as a way of culminating your learning journey on SFI's Complexity Explorer - so, in order to take part, you will need to have a completed a certain number of prerequisites.  More on that later.

At this moment, 50 SFI and Complexity Explorer alumni are taking part in a special pilot version of the Complexity Challenges.  They're been presented with a mystery question and are working to solve it by September 16th, after which they will review each others' work and be reviewed by the Challenge team.  We'll be sure to highlight the top solutions to come out of the Challenges once they're all wrapped up by the end of September.

After the pilot Challenges close, we'll be setting up the application pages for you all to go and get access so you can be ready to enroll in Challenges as we release them.  We're hoping to hold our first open Challenge in the beginning of 2018.  For more information on the Challenges, please visit our Challenges page.

Tshirt Design Contest

We want YOU, yes you, to help us create the next generation of Complexity Explorer t-shirts.  To this end, we're holding a little contest.  Come up with a design, email it to us, and we'll post our favorites for the Complexity Explorer community to vote on them. The winner will get a prize, along with a t-shirt featuring the new design.  We're sure there are some great design minds out there who are tired of our old "slap a logo on it" style.  Here's your chance to shake things up!

Your guidelines for this design contest are:

  • Must use one of the new Complexity Explorer logo versions somewhere on the shirt

  • The design can be on either the front or the front AND back of the shirt

  • Use 3 or fewer colors

To join the contest, send us an email to volunteer@complexityexplorer.org.  We will get you started and answer any questions you may have.  You have until September 26th at end of day MST to submit your designs, after which we will select and post our favorites and invite you to vote! We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

We are getting rid of our old stock of all of our t-shirts and totes - so we've dropped them in price by 20%! Now is a good time to pick one up if you haven't yet and you're a U.S. resident.

This Month in Subtitles

We've added Simon DeDeo's Introduction to Renormalization videos to our subtitling team in Amara.  Please help us out by creating captions and subtitles for these and our other videos!  Join the team.  Share your knowledge.
